RETScreen Clean Energy Management Software

Backgrounder

Since 1998, the Government of Canada’s RETScreen Clean Energy Management Software has been used for clean energy project analysis and implementation by governments, companies, and academic institutions around the globe. It is a unique decision support tool that can be used to compare different sources of energy by evaluating energy costs and savings, emissions reductions and the financial viability of renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies.

RETScreen, which stands for Renewable-energy and Energy-efficiency Technology Screening software, is currently available in 36 languages and has over 465,000 users worldwide, including at least 54,000 users in the United States and over 5,600 users in Mexico. To date, RETScreen has helped users save a cumulative total of well over $8 billion.

The next generation of the RETScreen software, called RETScreen Expert, is currently under development by the Government of Canada’s Department of Natural Resources Canada in collaboration with key international and national organizations, including the United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This advanced new version of the software will accelerate access to clean energy and allow a broad range of clean energy stakeholders to quickly identify, assess, optimize and track the performance of clean energy investments over an entire project life-cycle. The next generation of the tool is expected to be launched across North America and around the globe in the fall 2016.
