Eight tree-planting projects supported in Saskatchewan

Backgrounder

On July 7, 2026, the Honourable Nathalie Provost, Secretary of State (Nature), highlighted eight projects across Saskatchewan. These projects represent an investment of $24.5 million through the 2 Billion Trees (2BT) program to plant more than five million trees that will help protect nature and biodiversity in the province by restoring critical habitats for species at risk and wildfire-affected areas and by advancing Indigenous-led tree-planting and reforestation efforts. All projects were approved with funding prior to the Budget 2025 announcement to wind down the 2BT program.

Project name:
Lac La Ronge Indian Band Forest Restoration Project
Recipient: Kitsaki Management Limited Partnership
Location: Northern Saskatchewan
Funding amount: $7,868,264
Description: The project will plant 3.5 million trees in Woodland Cree traditional lands in northern Saskatchewan and ensure the boreal forest can regenerate after successive wildfires.

Project name: Métis Nation – Saskatchewan Home and Future Forests Project
Recipient: Métis Nation – Saskatchewan
Location: Across eco-regions in Saskatchewan
Funding: $6,960,450
Description: The project will support a community-led tree planting initiative to plant 618,000 trees to sequester carbon and expand tree coverage to increase climate resilience.

Project name:
Saskatchewan Woodland Caribou Habitat Restoration
Recipient: Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment
Location: Across Saskatchewan
Funding: $6,353,520
Description: The project will restore legacy linear features and priority areas of caribou habitat affected by high-severity wildfires within Saskatchewan’s Boreal Plain (SK2) woodland caribou range. Restoration activities will include access planning, site preparation and the planting of 417,000 trees across 350 hectares to support habitat recovery and enhance landscape connectivity.

Project name:
Reforestation of Saskatchewan’s Provincial Parks: Part 1
Recipient: Sask Parks
Location: Across Saskatchewan
Funding: $743,480
Description: The project will plant 13,000 to 50,000 trees each year over eight years, for a total of 95,299 trees, to fill the needs of the Core Area Silviculture Program (CASP) across Saskatchewan’s provincial parks.

Project name:
Reforestation of Saskatchewan’s Provincial Parks: Part 2
Recipient: Sask Parks
Location: Across Saskatchewan
Funding: $961,620
Description: The project will plant and maintain 418,440 new trees over eight years to ensure successful regeneration. Saskatchewan will also conduct site preparation and reclamation activities where necessary to increase the amount of viable habitat available to both species at risk (SAR) and park wildlife.

Project name:
Cowessess Forest Growth Project
Recipient: Cowessess First Nation
Location: Cowessess, Saskatchewan
Funding: $663,782
Description: The project will build Indigenous capacity and plant 25,000 native tree species to expand forest cover within Cowessess First Nation, including on disturbed agricultural lands for long-term ecosystem improvements and carbon sequestration.

Project name:
Métis Nation – Saskatchewan 2BT Program
Recipient: Métis Nation – Saskatchewan
Location: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
Funding: $625,031
Description: The project supported capacity building for tree planting through a feasibility study to determine the viability of seed collection and a tree nursery. The project ended in March 2026 and also contributed to the planting of over 5,000 trees on the Back to Batoche Festival Grounds.

Project name:
2024 SaskPower Planting Project
Recipient: Sask Power
Location: Regina, Saskatchewan
Funding: $327,842
Description: The project will plant 99,709 incremental trees across 30 hectares by 2027, filling in and enhancing the quality of habitat for migratory birds, deer and other wildlife; increasing biodiversity; and helping reduce erosion, dust and wind near power stations.
