I want to thank Joy Thomas, President and CEO of CPA Canada, and Johanne Charbonneau, the Chair of CPA Ontario, for the welcome. It was important for me to be here to hear from you, and to listen. This is a consultation, after all, and I know there are opinions, ideas and insights in this room that will help us get it right. I'm looking forward to taking questions in just a few minutes, but first I want to tell you about our goal to address some of the inherent unfairness that is built in to our tax system.

It's true that Canada and Mexico have always shared a special bond. That is in part due to the fact that we share a land border with the U.S.—our economic and cultural superpower next door. And though we don't share a common border ourselves, we are bound by people-to-people ties and integrated supply chains that are the result of what has been one of the most successful economic and trading relationships the world has ever seen.

When I look at the stacks of five-inch-thick tax binders on my desk, I'm reminded that this is the hard work of government. When it comes to our tax system, I want to enhance competitiveness so that Canadian businesses create meaningful, well-paying middle class jobs.

Thank you, Janice (Charette) for that kind introduction. And thanks to those who helped organize this event here at Canada House today: David Marsh from the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum, and Rachel Pine. And thank you to all of you for coming. It's a pleasure to be here.
