Canada and Yukon announce major expansion of $10 a day child care

Today, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, the Honourable Sandy Silver, Yukon Premier, and the Honourable Jeanie McLean, Yukon Minister of Education, announced an agreement that significantly improves early learning and child care for children in Yukon. Through the agreement, the governments of Canada and Yukon will work together to rapidly expand access to quality, affordable, flexible, and inclusive early learning and child care programs and services.

Today, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, affirmed that Bill C-208 has been passed by Parliament, received Royal Assent, and has become a part of Canada’s Income Tax Act. The changes contained in this legislation now apply in law. This news release seeks to bring clarity to the government’s intentions going forward and replaces the June 30th news release on this subject.


Deputy Prime Minister Announces Carolyn Rogers as Senior Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada

Today, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, announced the appointment of Carolyn Rogers as the new Senior Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada. Ms. Rogers will begin her seven-year term on December 15, 2021. Ms. Rogers is currently the Secretary General of the international Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, which is comprised of 45 central banks and bank supervisors from 28 jurisdictions. Ms. Rogers also previously served as Assistant Superintendent, Regulation Sector, at Canada’s Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions.

Last night, Bill C-30, An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on April 19, 2021 and other measures received Royal Assent. The passage of Bill C-30 enacts the government’s budget plan to finish the fight against COVID-19, create jobs and growth, and ensure a robust economic recovery that brings all Canadians along.
