The governments of Canada and Nova Scotia are making significant investments in early learning and child care systems so that each and every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. Today, the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, the Honourable Stephen McNeil, Premier of Nova Scotia, and the Honourable Zach Churchill, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development for Nova Scotia, announced a bilateral agreement. The agreement reaffirms their commitment to children’s development, helping parents with the rising costs of raising children, and addressing the unique early learning and child care needs of Nova Scotian families, including Acadian and Francophone families.

The Enabling Accessibility Fund (EAF) was originally announced as a three-year, $45-million program to support community-based projects across Canada. It was then renewed for another three years prior to being renewed on an ongoing basis at $15 million per year, to continue to improve accessibility for Canadians with disabilities.

Through support from the Enabling Accessibility Fund, the A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA in Kitchener and Stork Family YMCA in Waterloo are now better equipped to allow the full participation of people with disabilities in their facilities. The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities, made the announcement today at the Stork Family YMCA of Waterloo.

The first phase of Old Age Security (OAS) automatic enrolment was successfully implemented in April 2013 and resulted in automatically enrolling 45 percent of new OAS beneficiaries to receive the basic pension. Information from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) was leveraged to identify clients who would be automatically enrolled for the second phase, which launched in November 2016. This resulted in an increase in the number of clients who were automatically enrolled to over 60 percent of new OAS beneficiaries. The month after turning 64 years old, these clients receive a letter from Service Canada informing them that they could be eligible for the OAS pension and that they have been selected for automatic enrolment.
