Canada’s Employment Insurance (EI) program is a critical part of Canada’s social safety net. It plays an important role in supporting workers during temporary periods of unemployment and in stabilizing the economy during economic hardships. That is why the Government of Canada is working with unions, employers and other stakeholders to modernize the EI program, so that it is fairer, more flexible and more responsive to the needs of current and future workers.

The Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS) is a horizontal Government of Canada initiative delivered in collaboration with 12 federal departments, agencies and Crown corporations, including Employment and Social Development Canada. Through the YESS, the Government of Canada helps young people, particularly those facing barriers to employment, get the information and gain the skills, work experience and abilities they need to make a successful transition into the labour market. Employment and Social Development Canada’s YESS program provides opportunities and supports, such as mentorship, access to computers and access to mental health supports, all aimed at helping youth who face barriers to enter the labour market.

The Government of Canada takes its responsibilities to protect temporary foreign workers (TFWs) very seriously. Ensuring the health and safety of these workers while they are in Canada is a key priority, and the Government is taking concrete action to better support them.

Temporary foreign workers are entitled to be informed about their rights in Canada. Therefore, the employer must provide the foreign worker with up-to-date information about their rights in Canada. The employer must provide this information on or before the first day of work, and in the worker’s language of choice (either English or French, the two official languages of Canada). The employer must also make this information available to the temporary foreign worker throughout their period of employment.

The Government of Canada is committed to appointing highly qualified candidates to serve the best interests of Canadians. Today, Minister of Labour Seamus O’Regan Jr. announced the reappointment of Thomas Brady to the Canada Industrial Relations Board for a term of three years, effective October 11, 2022. Mr. Brady was a full-time member of the Board from May 2017 to May 2021, and was reappointed following consultation with organizations representative of employers.
