The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Karina Gould, Minister of International Development, today issued the following statement: “Canada continues to support efforts to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and is deeply committed to addressing its grave humanitarian consequences. Building on Canada’s support provided in the immediate aftermath of the fighting in 2020, we are announcing an additional $1 million to support the efforts of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“Seventy-seven years ago, Crimean Tatars were forcibly deported by Soviet authorities from the Crimean Peninsula. Effective May 17, 2021, Canada is imposing sanctions against the following individuals and entities in relation to the coup perpetrated by the Tatmadaw, Myanmar’s armed forces.
The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced additional sanctions against 16 individuals and 10 entities under the Special Economic Measures (Burma) Regulations in response to the military’s ongoing brutal repression of the people of Myanmar and their refusal to take steps to restore democracy.
