Effective March 22, 2021, Canada is imposing sanctions against Chinese officials and a Chinese entity in response to gross and systematic human rights violations that have been committed in China.
Today, Canada announced it is imposing new sanctions against 4 officials and 1 entity under the Special Economic Measures (People’s Republic of China) Regulations, based on their participation in gross and systematic human rights violations in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR). These measures are being taken in coordination with the United States and the United Kingdom, and in solidarity with the European Union.

During their conversation —which was Ambassador Tai’s first international call since her confirmation—Minister Ng congratulated her on her historic and unanimous confirmation as United States Trade Representative.

The evidence, including from the Chinese Government’s own documents, satellite imagery, and eyewitness testimony is overwhelming. China’s extensive program of repression includes severe restrictions on religious freedoms, the use of forced labour, mass detention in internment camps, forced sterilisations, and the concerted destruction of Uyghur heritage.
A rules-based multilateral trading system, with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its core, is essential to ensuring a sustainable and inclusive global economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
