The National Security public consultation, conducted from spring to December, 2016, lead to a commitment to ensuring that the national security practices of departments and agencies fully respect Canadians’ rights and freedoms.
The Government of Canada has a clear responsibility to keep Canadians safe and protect their individual rights and freedoms. This means that Government departments and agencies must always ensure that they comply with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Let me begin my remarks by extending my appreciation to our colleagues in Argentina for their great work in hosting this conference – the very first time that a South American country has done so.
The Eleventh World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from December 10 to 13, 2017, was an opportunity for WTO members to discuss ways of moving the organization forward. Canada played a central role in advancing progressive trade initiatives that aim to make trade work for people and protect the interests of Canadians and citizens worldwide.
As a result of the $12.5 million in donations made by Canadians to the Myanmar Crisis Relief Fund between August 25 and November 28, 2017, the Government of Canada will contribute $12.55 million to the fund.
The crisis in Myanmar has resulted in the influx of an additional 600,000 Rohingya refugees into Bangladesh since August 25, 2017, the majority of them women and children.
The Export and Import Permits Act places very strict controls on the export of firearms, weapons and devices defined as prohibited in the Criminal Code of Canada. Export permit applications for these items are only considered to countries on the Automatic Firearms Country Control List (AFCCL).
Canada is steadfast in its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, security, and prosperity. The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that Canada will include Ukraine in the Automatic Firearms Country Control List (AFCCL).
