“Five years ago today, Myanmar’s military overthrew the country’s democratically elected government. Since the coup, the situation has deteriorated into one of the world’s most severe human rights and humanitarian crises. The conflict has displaced more than 3.6 million people internally and left more than 16 million in need of humanitarian assistance, including 5 million children.
The global landscape is rapidly changing, leaving economies, businesses, and workers under a cloud of uncertainty. In response, Canada’s new government is focused on what we can control: building a stronger economy to make life more affordable for Canadians. Affordability pressures—especially those related to food—require immediate support for Canadians.

The Honourable Randeep Sarai, Secretary of State (International Development), concluded a visit to Vietnam, Indonesia and Fiji, which took place from January 6 to 16, 2026. During his trip, Secretary of State Sarai reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to deepening economic partnerships, development cooperation and exploring new trade opportunities. He also highlighted Canada’s priorities of inclusive economic growth, trade readiness, climate resilience, and gender equality across the Indo-Pacific region.
The Honourable Randeep Sarai, Secretary of State (International Development), announced that Canada will provide more than $123 million in funding to support projects in Vietnam, Indonesia and Fiji. He also announced the allocation of funding for four new initiatives valued at a total of more than $4.2 million, under the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-Canada Plan of Action Trust Fund (2023 to 2029).
