Canada meets with international partners at the G7 Health Ministers’ Meeting and 75th World Health Assembly

Today, the Minister of Health, the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, arrives in Berlin for the G7 Health Ministers’ Meeting where the G7 partners will work jointly on global health issues. Minister Duclos will then travel to Geneva from May 22-24 for the 75th World Health Assembly. He will deliver Canada’s plenary statement highlighting our continued commitment to international and multilateral engagement to protect the health and safety of Canadians.


Calgary retail-chain Adult Source receives $30,000 fine and 12-month probation order for offences under the Food and Drugs Act

Following a Health Canada investigation, Alain Laflamme, the sole director of National Agricultural Corporation, doing business as Adult Source (a chain of adult stores in Calgary, Alberta) pleaded guilty to charges under the Food and Drugs Act related to the sale of unauthorized male sexual enhancement drugs. On April 28, 2022, National Agricultural Corporation received a $30,000 fine and a 12-month probation order prohibiting the sale, importation, packaging, manufacturing and distribution of any health products, including drugs, natural health products and medical devices.


Final Report of the Expert Panel on MAID and Mental Illness

The Expert Panel on Medical Assistance in Dying and Mental Illness Final Report was tabled in Parliament on May 13, 2022. As required by former Bill C-7, the most recent legislation on Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID), the Ministers of Health and Justice established the Expert Panel to undertake an independent review of the recommended protocols, guidance and safeguards that apply to requests made for MAID by people who have a mental illness.

Today, the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Health, and the Honourable David Lametti, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, with the support of the Honourable Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Associate Minister of Health, tabled the final report of the Expert Panel on MAID and Mental Illness (Expert Panel) in Parliament. This was a requirement of the MAID legislation that came into force on March 17, 2021.


Improving Access to Abortion Services and Information under the Sexual and Reproductive Health Fund

Budget 2021 committed $45 million over three years, starting in 2021-22, to improve access to a full range of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care support, information, and services―including abortion services—for people in Canada who face the greatest barriers to access. Health Canada’s SRH Fund was created to support a wide range of evidence-informed and innovative projects for underserved people in Canada who are at increased risk for poorer SRH outcomes, such as LGBTQ2 individuals, Indigenous and racialized people, women and youth.


Government of Canada Strengthens Access to Abortion Services

Today the Minister of Health, the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, and the Honourable Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, announced more than $3.5 million in funding for projects by Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights (Action Canada) and by the National Abortion Federation Canada (NAF Canada), coming out of the Sexual and Reproductive Health Fund. These projects will improve access by removing barriers to vital abortion services and offer accurate reproductive health information to Canadians.
