Through Canada’s renewed Oceans Protection Plan, Fisheries and Oceans Canada has previously funded three University of Guelph projects focused on studying the impacts of diluted bitumen exposure on Pacific salmon. This research is important to help prepare for and respond to potential oil spills in areas where salmon live.
Five projects in the Gaspé Peninsula and the Lower St. Lawrence funded by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and the Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Québec (MAPAQ) under the Quebec Fisheries Fund.
The funded projects will be undertaken by 2027 in the following Magdalen Islands harbours managed by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Projects could range from repairs, to reconstruction of assets, or dredging related work.
