On Canada’s East Coast, Atlantic mackerel plays an important role in local economies as a recreational, commercial and bait fishery. It is also an important food source for many species, including tuna and Atlantic cod. Unfortunately, the number of spawning-age mackerel are at an historic low. Immediate action must be taken to conserve and rebuild the population.

A significant British Columbia court case was finalized on April 21, 2021, by Prince Rupert Provincial Court, against Silas Miro Levesque, commercial master of the vessel Wind Walker. Mr. Levesque was found guilty of fishing for lingcod in a culturally significant closed area inside the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site.

The Canadian Arctic is a vast region with a rich and varied history. In 2018, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard created Arctic Regions in the spirit of reconciliation to acknowledge and address the unique realities of this area while advancing collaboration with Northerners. As part of this goal, we are launching a departmental Arctic Youth Council. This will enable us to better understand local needs and priorities, and deliver essential and innovative services specific to the Arctic Regions.

Today, the Honourable Bernadette Jordan, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard, confirmed her support for an interim protocol that would allow harvesters to freeze their catch, a process commonly known as “tubbing.” This Protocol, developed by the Pacific Prawn Fishermen’s Association will help prawn harvesters ensure that their catch, including catch frozen in tubs, is readily available for inspection by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Fishery Officers and legally available for sale.

Starting on April 28, 2021, federal fishery officers will be able to issue tickets for minor fishery offences in the provinces of British Columbia, Québec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island.
