Today, Parks Canada and the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada commemorated the importance of the Girl Guide Movement in Canada as an event of national historic significance. A special ceremony was held in Toronto, Ontario, with members of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, and members of the Girl Guides of Canada from all across the country.

Joël Lightbound, Member of Parliament for Louis-Hébert (Quebec), on behalf of the Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Catherine McKenna, today unveiled a commemorative plaque from the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada (HSMBC) to recognize the national historic significance of Dorimène Desjardins.

Dorimène Desjardins is considered the co-founder of the caisses populaires (credit unions) for her work in collaboration with husband Alphonse Desjardins, who founded the first caisse populaire on December 6, 1900.
