Vulnerable and marginalized women, including women who live in remote and Northern communities, racialized and Indigenous women, women fleeing violence, newcomers, single mothers, LGBTQ2 women, low-income women, and women with disabilities and exceptionalities, face numerous barriers to employment. Our government is working to remove these barriers so that we improve women’s financial security, grow the middle class and strengthen our economy.

Today, the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of Status of Women, announced the recipients of the Governor General’s Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case for 2018.
On Persons Day, we celebrate an important milestone in the struggle for women’s participation in Canadian political life. On this day, which takes place during Women’s History Month, we honour the Famous Five – Emily Murphy, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Louise McKinney, Nellie McClung and Irene Parlby, courageous Canadian women who won a hard-fought battle for gender equality and those who continue this work today.
The Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, Carolyn Bennett, together with the Minister of Indigenous Services, Jane Philpott, and the Minister of Status of Women, Maryam Monsef, issued the following statement today.
