On behalf of the Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Veterans Affairs Canada and Associate Minister of National Defence, the public is invited to an Open House in the atrium of the Daniel J. MacDonald Building after the Remembrance Day ceremony held at the Charlottetown Cenotaph.
Engaging Canadian youth in the act of remembrance is fundamental to ensuring that the legacy of our service members who have selflessly fought to defend peace and democracy around the world lives on for generations to come.
The Battle of Vimy Ridge proved to be a great triumph, but it came at a heavy cost. It was 100 years ago that the 100,000 Canadians who served there suffered more than 10,600 casualties, nearly 3,600 of which were fatal. In April of this year, Canadians and allies alike, took time to remember this never forgotten story of perseverance, heroism and strength. The Government of Canada remembers and honours the legacy of generations of Canadians who have served our country.
Canada’s Veterans, those who gave their lives in service, and those who continue to serve our country today, deserve our greatest recognition and appreciation. This Veterans’ Week, we also reflect specifically on the courage and bravery shown by those who fought in the Battle of Passchendaele a century ago, and the contributions of generations of Canadians in uniform.
November 10 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Passchendaele. Some 100,000 members of the Canadian Corps took part in the Battle of Passchendaele. Victory came at a great cost, with more than 4,000 Canadian soldiers being killed and almost 12,000 wounded. Fighting slowly but steadily forward through the mud, Canadians displayed great bravery, with nine of our soldiers earning the Victoria Cross.
Canada's service women and men have served our country with bravery, honour and dignity—putting their lives at risk to protect the values Canadians cherish most. To ensure that their legacy continues, it is important to educate Canadian youth and future generations on the contributions that these Canadian heroes have made in shaping the Canada we know today.
