The public and the media are invited to attend the official Government of Canada Remembrance Day ceremony at the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial near the village of Albert, in the Somme region of France.
Sherry Romanado, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, and Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, join Canadian youth and the Government of Canada delegation in remembering the Battle of Passchendaele on November 6, 2017.
Sherry Romanado, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, His Worship Jim Watson, Mayor of Ottawa and Mr. Mark O’Neill, President and CEO of the Canadian Museum of History and Canadian War Museum, will attend a Candlelight Tribute to honour our country’s fallen heroes and Veterans, and pass the torch of remembrance to youth.
Today, the Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, issued the following statement regarding the commemorative plaque unveiled in honour of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent.
Sherry Romanado, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, will lead an official Government of Canada delegation in Ypres, Belgium, from November 7-12 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele. The Honourable Harjit Sajjan, Minister of National Defence will be in Belgium to attend a ceremony at the Tyne Cot Cemetery on November 10. The delegation will include Veterans, representatives from Indigenous and Veterans organizations, descendants of Passchendaele Veterans, parliamentarians, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and youth. The Canadian Armed Forces contingent traveling to Belgium will be composed of units and branches that fought in Passchendaele as well as the band of the Royal 22e Regiment. Events will also be held across Canada to mark the centennial of the Battle of Passchendaele in collaboration with Veterans’ Week events.
November 10 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Passchendaele. Some 100,000 members of the Canadian Corps took part in the Battle of Passchendaele. Victory came at a great cost, with more than 4,000 Canadian soldiers being killed and almost 12,000 wounded. Fighting slowly but steadily forward through the mud, Canadians displayed great bravery, with nine of our soldiers earning the Victoria Cross.
Canada's service women and men have served our country with bravery, honour and dignity—putting their lives at risk to protect the values Canadians cherish most. To ensure that their legacy continues, it is important to educate Canadian youth and future generations on the contributions that these Canadian heroes have made in shaping the Canada we know today.
The Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, will visit students at a Charlottetown high school to unveil this year’s Veterans’ Week poster and highlight the significance of the poster, which marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele.
