I’m thinking for example of the social impact bond which was launched at this event last year and developed by MaRS in partnership with the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. This initiative is helping 7,000 Canadian seniors by reducing their risk of cardiovascular disease due to hypertension

As many of you know, my term began in September. What you may not know is that, although my immediate past experience is in the private sector, I have a long history of work in the public service. I began my career at the Competition Bureau and worked for several years in the CRTC’s telecommunications sector in the 1990s.

We know that concerns were raised by many witnesses about various aspects of CASL. Despite their criticisms, the legislation is largely effective. You heard repeated testimony endorsing that view during your hearings – from consumer advocates representing vulnerable communities, various technical experts and academics.

Did that five seconds of silence feel long to you? Five seconds is not a long time, but five seconds of silence on the radio can be a disaster. The reason is simple: because it cuts the connection with listeners. And as everyone in this room knows, maintaining a strong audience connection is the key to success in broadcasting.

This is my first chance to speak with many of you since starting in my new position as Vice-Chair of Telecommunications with the CRTC. I have looked forward to this, as this Summit has earned a well-deserved reputation for showcasing the very latest in telecommunications.
