Agreement reached on retaining Medicago’s strategic research and development assets in Canada and recovering payment from Medicago

Following the cessation of Medicago’s operations by its parent company Mitsubishi Chemical Group Corporation (“MCG”) in February 2023, the Government of Canada’s objectives were threefold: maintain Medicago’s intellectual property and critical research assets in Canada; ensure a Canadian company retains the technology platform, talent and expertise; and identify third-party investors that could help maintain and expand Medicago’s platform capabilities in-country. This is to enhance domestic pandemic preparedness capabilities and ensure that a promising technology platform remains in Canada.

Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology are benefiting society in many ways, including in improving supply chain management, enhancing health care and precision medicine, and helping tackle environmental sustainability challenges. These advances, however, have also reaffirmed the urgency of ensuring that AI systems, particularly advanced generative AI systems, are developed and used safely. That is why the Government of Canada recently launched the Voluntary Code of Conduct on the Responsible Development and Management of Advanced Generative AI Systems.


Canada launches the Cement & Concrete Breakthrough initiative at COP28

Today, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, and His Excellency Omar Ahmed Suwaina Al Suwaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), announced the launch of the Cement & Concrete Breakthrough initiative at COP28 in Dubai. This initiative reaffirms Canada’s commitment to working with countries, businesses and international partner organizations to accelerate investments in the technologies, tools and policies that the cement and concrete industry needs to realize net-zero solutions by 2050.
