I want to thank Joy Thomas, President and CEO of CPA Canada, and Johanne Charbonneau, the Chair of CPA Ontario, for the welcome. It was important for me to be here to hear from you, and to listen. This is a consultation, after all, and I know there are opinions, ideas and insights in this room that will help us get it right. I'm looking forward to taking questions in just a few minutes, but first I want to tell you about our goal to address some of the inherent unfairness that is built in to our tax system.

Vancouver, British ColumbiaSeptember 5, 2017 Thank you very much. It's wonderful to be back in Vancouver. I was here a number of times. Well, the first time I was here as a new Immigration Minister was to promote more transit travellers to consider travelling through Vancouver Airport, and how the federal government can help with that, with respect to having a more facilitative approach towards transit travellers for select number of cities and low-risk countries. If you have a United States visa and you're travelling from certain parts of Asia and you're going through Vancouver, then we will not ask you to obtain a Canadian visa. Through that, I was able to interact with the folks here, to learn about the potential of that traffic to dramatically expand Vancouver Airport and create real economic benefits for the region.

It's true that Canada and Mexico have always shared a special bond. That is in part due to the fact that we share a land border with the U.S.—our economic and cultural superpower next door. And though we don't share a common border ourselves, we are bound by people-to-people ties and integrated supply chains that are the result of what has been one of the most successful economic and trading relationships the world has ever seen.

I want to recognize that we are meeting on the traditional territory of the Algonquin people. Long before there was a lumber industry in a place called Bytown, the Algonquin lived in - and were part of - the forests of this region.
