Distinguished guests and colleagues, ladies and gentlemen, and particularly the leaders of Indigenous governments, it's an honour to join you today on the traditional territory of the Lenape people and to honour all the Indigenous peoples whose moccasins have walked this land and have called it their home.
It is a pleasure and an honour for me to be here today. Thank you for the warm welcome and the invitation to participate in this assembly. As Canada’s minister of foreign affairs, I want to point out the importance of what is being discussed here.

Thank you for that kind introduction. I want to start by talking about a young man who is on a journey to Canada. He is filled with conflicting emotions. One he’s thinking about the fear that engulfs him as he thinks about this new country and this new land and wondering whether people there will accept him, what are the norms there and the language and so on.
Our government is about 18 months into our first mandate. Throughout that “young” tenure, we have been focused on our core commitments to Canadians about the economy.
The themes of today are Energy, Infrastructure and Sustainable Development. These are right up my alley and top priorities for the Government of Canada.

Thank you, Anthony Rota, Member of Parliament for Nipissing–Timiskaming for that kind introduction.Good morning, everyone. It’s great to be here in North Bay. This is my fourth trip to Northern Ontario. Staying connected is essential to me as minister responsible for regional economic development.
