Coincidently, this is a topic which the CRTC is currently examining. In late January, the Commission began a public hearing on television programming that is closest to Canadians – local news and current affairs that keeps them informed of events and issues pertinent to their communities. This type of programming promotes the democratic process by keeping citizens informed and engaged. We are looking at the presence of this programming in order to ensure the future of local and community television in today's fast-evolving and increasingly fractured media environment.

At the CRTC, the course we follow is not just our own. We are reaching out to Canadians in new and ever-more accessible ways, bringing them into the middle of our conversations about the future of broadcasting and telecommunications in this country. Our invitation to them is simple: Let's Talk TV, Let's Talk Broadband. And they're responding. They're telling us they want to take back control over their communication system.
First of all, I would like to extend warm greetings on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.
Well, thank you, not only for that generous introduction, but for the time we spent when we sat together yesterday - time spent over the last two days learning from the Chiefs, learning from community, learning about inclusion and balance and diversity. And to your National Chief: I know that I didn't write your speech, but I think you wrote mine, and I think that's going to become very clear over the next few minutes.
