We are pleased to be here today to share with you the steps we are taking to better protect Canadians. We recognize that these unsolicited calls impact everyone and are a scourge on our society. For some, however – particularly vulnerable people – they are a serious problem, because they often lead to criminal activity, such as fraud and identity theft.
It was one year ago that our government helped launch the Canadian Minerals and Metals Plan – right here at PDAC. That Plan represented a milestone in Canada’s mining history. CanWISP members play a vital role in Canada’s modern communications industry. Canadians in rural, remote and underserved regions rely on companies such as those represented here today to connect with the rest of the country and the world.
CETA [Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement]—our free trade agreement with the European Union—had just entered into force, thanks to the foresight of Pierre-Marc Johnson, former premier of Quebec. We had also just signed the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement. And today, as you know, we are finalizing the ratification of the new NAFTA.
Globe 2020 is an invaluable venue to coordinate on policy, on principles, to discuss commercial opportunity and to manage the transition — really the evolution — of our economy as we combat climate change.
