Thank you very much. It’s a pleasure to be here with you. I know this community very well. It’s a very wonderful community and what makes Etobicoke North such an amazing, dynamic community is the strong women who are here.

Our mandate is broad. Much more so than those of many of our regulatory colleagues around the world. And we perform a wide range of activities in support of it. Of particular interest to this conference, we promote compliance with Canada’s Unsolicited Telecommunications Rules, including the National Do Not Call List.

It’s great to be back here in Washington to help launch the Regulatory Cooperation Council (RCC) Stakeholder Forum, and to express Canada’s support for regulatory cooperation.

The CRTC is well-known as an administrative tribunal that oversees Canada’s communication system in the public interest. We have been active participants at the IIC since its creation nearly 50 years ago, often sharing our perspective on broadcasting and telecommunications matters at conferences such as this one.

Good afternoon, everyone. I very much appreciate the chance to speak with you today and I’m happy to see such a high turnout – even though I suspect most of you are here just to see what a spy looks like.

2018 was a truly historic year with some real milestones, one of which was, of course, Bill C81, the Accessible Canada Act. It is one of those moments when a law passes through both Houses, gets Royal Assent, and bends the curve of this country’s history. Other such milestones that come to mind are the Official Languages Act, and the Charter of Rights. Canada will never be the same after that legislation is passed. It is a huge accomplishment and I know that many people in this room have helped shape it.

Every day in this country, on our watch, someone walks into a home or perhaps a hospital room where a First Nation or Inuit or Métis mother has given birth, and that baby toddler or child is taken away from their family.

This is a moment of passage into a very special community, which is the executive community of the finest public service in the world.

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen: Good evening, everyone. I want to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is the unceded territory of the Algonquin People.
