Today, the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of State and Chief Government Whip and Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North, on behalf of the Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support of $896,025 for eight projects on Vancouver Island, under the Government of Canada's Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.
Backgrounder - Winnipeg used its 2015 allocation of the federal Gas Tax Fund to improve roads and public transportation across the city. Part of this year's allocation will continue to be used to pay down financing for two completed projects that area residents and tourists alike are already enjoying – the Disraeli Bridge and the Chief Peguis Trail. Funds are additionally targeted for upgrades to public transit. This is an annual budget item to ensure the public transit fleet continues to operate efficiently and that the Winnipeg public transit system continues to provide reliable and effective transportation option for local commuters. The Honourable Alice Wong, Minister of State (Seniors), today announced the first in a series of New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) pan-Canadian project clusters, that aim to address social isolation among seniors in targeted populations across Canada. This group of six interconnected projects is being funded through the 2015–2016 NHSP Call for Proposals for Pan-Canadian Projects, which opened May 29, 2015 and closed July 10, 2015.
