Hanukkah marks the triumph of the Jewish people against tyranny more than two thousand years ago. Jews around the world commemorate this miracle by lighting the menorah. Hanukkah culminates on the eighth night, when all the candles burn together, symbolizing the struggle of the Jewish people against adversity.

Last April I joined thousands of fellow Canadians in France for the commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. There were hundreds of veterans and some 5,000 Canadian students, approximately 3,600 of whom represented our soldiers who fell at Vimy. It was deeply moving to watch the young inheritors of our hard-won freedoms take up the torch from their ancestors.
