The humanitarian assistance funding announced today, totalling $5 million, will be channelled through United Nations agencies to address critical needs of the people affected by the earthquake in Nepal

The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, announced today that the Government of Canada will provide an additional $5 million in humanitarian assistance funding in response to the appeal launched by the United Nations. This funding will help United Nations humanitarian agencies address the critical needs of those affected by the earthquake in Nepal.
One week after the massive earthquake struck Nepal, the situation remains severe. More than 6,000 people are confirmed dead, more than 14,000 are injured and another 8 million are affected across the country. Assessments by the Nepali authorities, the United Nations, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and non-governmental organizations continue to stress the severity of the situation including ongoing difficulties getting into and operating in Nepal.

Team members from Canadian Forces Base Trenton will deploy immediately to Nepal, along with civilian, political and humanitarian personnel from Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, at the direction of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and under the oversight of Canada's High Commission to India, which is accredited to Nepal.
