Due to its strategic location and its largely ice-free deep harbour, the city of St. John's was selected during the early 1940s by American military planners to house Fort Pepperrell, an American military base with 65 buildings.

The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and Minister of Canada Economic Development, today announced the awarding of $314,963 in repayable funding to Bouilloire Falmec Inc. for the adjustment and upgrading of technology used in the design of water tube boilers for cogeneration plants producing less than 2.5 megawatts of electricity. This funding will also serve for the preparation of a productivity enhancement study and export sales strategy. These projects are expected to result in the creation of 10 or so jobs over the next year.
