Low-skilled and unemployed workers in Newfoundland and Labrador will be better prepared to be part of the province's growing economy, thanks to two new federal-provincial agreements announced today by the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, and the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment for Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, announced today on behalf of the Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, the Honourable Peter Gordon MacKay, plans for several construction projects at CFB Gagetown with an estimated investment value of over $140 million for the local economy. These projects include the construction of new training accommodations building, and upgrading the base utilities.
The Honourable Peter Gordon MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, announced several expansion projects today for 8 Wing/CFB Trenton. This investment of more than $500 million includes infrastructure upgrades, and the expansion of the base to accommodate the relocation of Joint Task Force 2 (JTF 2).

Gatineau, September 5, 2008 - The Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada, the Honourable Christian Paradis, and the Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, the Honourable Peter Gordon MacKay, today announced that the Government of Canada intends to award two long-term contracts totalling approximately $2 billion to Lockheed Martin Canada for the Combat Systems Integration (CSI) Design and Build and In-Service Support elements of the modernization of Canada's 12 Halifax Class Navy frigates.
