Brandon residents and the surrounding communities will be able to enjoy a new recreation facility, thanks to joint infrastructure funding from the Government of Canada, the Province of Manitoba and the City of Brandon and Brandon Family YMCA. Funding of $6.9 million is being provided to build a family-friendly leisure centre at the present location of the YMCA in downtown Brandon through the Canada-Manitoba Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF), which consists of equal contributions from the two levels of government and the proponent. The Province of Manitoba is contributing a further $1.7 million to this project through the Building Manitoba Fund.

The Honourable David Emerson, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Helena Guergis, Secretary of State (Foreign Affairs and International Trade) (Sport), today congratulated the Canadian athletes who competed in the XXIX Olympic Games in Beijing, and wished Canada's Paralympic athletes well as they prepare to set off to compete in the XIII Paralympic Summer Games, also taking place in Beijing from September 6 to 17, 2008.

The Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency have received laboratory results from Health Canada that establish a link between meat products recalled by Maple Leaf Foods from their plant in Toronto and an outbreak of listeriosis in four provinces. To date, 21 cases of listeriosis have been confirmed, and the same strain has been detected in four people who have died. A further 30 cases remain under investigation.
