The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, made the following statement following a record seizure in Vancouver of the illegal precursor chemical MDP2P - the main ingredient used in the production of Ecstasy.
Canadian Forces members today successfully helped locate a family of seven who had been missing for a week in a remote region of Nunavut after searchers followed a signal fire the family had lit. Canadian Rangers from Nunavut had joined in the search that also included Canadian Forces aircraft, RCMP personnel, and local volunteers. Searchers were able to locate the missing family after sighting their burning snowmobile and komatiq (sled) in a remote area of the Melville peninsula. The assistance of the Canadian Forces had been requested by the Nunavut Emergency Management Organization and RCMP due to the vastness of the search area and prolonged duration.
