Today, parents get child care payments from Harper Government

Jacques Gourde, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for Lotbinière–Chutes-Chaudière, celebrated the first installment of the Harper Government's boosted Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) today. The newly increased child care benefit pays almost $2000 every year for each child under 6 and $720 for each child aged 6 through 17. With a retroactive payment from January 1, 2015, the Harper Government transferred almost $3 billion to 3.8 million families today-the largest single-day direct payment to families in history.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) today announced the opening of a NEXUS lane at the Stanstead, Quebec border crossing, providing more efficient border clearance for low-risk travellers. This lane will be used to process NEXUS members during high-volume periods between the hours of 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday and will be used as a regular lane at other times.

Le chemin rouge, the debut short documentary by Atikamekw filmmaker Thérèse Ottawa, has its world premiere screening on Tuesday, August 4, 6:30 p.m., at the 25th Montreal First Peoples' Festival. The festival runs July 29 to August 5. Shot in Opitciwan, Le chemin rouge offers an intimate look at the moving journey of Tony Chachai, a young Atikamekw man. His road to redemption- which begins with a promise to his dying mother-leads to a return to his roots and the passing on of his community's cultural practices, culminating with him dancing in a powwow alongside his cousin, Ronny Chachai.
