Fourth Report From the Air Travel Complaints Commissioner

OTTAWA — Transport Minister David Collenette today released the fourth report of the Air Travel Complaints Commissioner. The report, which covers the period from January to June 2002, notes a 13 per cent drop in the number of complaints and indicates that the number of issues being raised in complaints has dropped by 31 per cent.
"I am pleased that the Air Travel Complaints Commissioner is reporting a decrease in the number of complaints compared to the last reporting period," said Mr. Collenette. "This report is a reminder that customer service is essential for the success of Canada's airlines."
This is the first report from Ms Liette Lacroix Kenniff, who was appointed Air Travel Complaints Commissioner by the Government of Canada effective October 1, 2002. Her role is to review complaints about air travel that have not been resolved by airlines to the satisfaction of travellers. As part of her role, the commissioner can mediate or arrange for mediation. She also has the authority to obtain any document, record or material that will help resolve a complaint. As a member of the Canadian Transportation Agency, the commissioner has at her disposal all of the resources and powers of the Agency.
"Canada's air industry continues to gain strength, as demonstrated by the growing competition in this sector," added Mr. Collenette. "This report provides valuable insight for Canadian carriers and the Government of Canada as we identify areas where further improvements can be made."
