OTTAWA — Transport Minister David Collenette today announced that Captain Maury R. Sjoquist, of Gloucester, Ontario, and Mr. Peter Woodward, of Delta, B.C., are the recipients of Transport Canada's Marine Safety Award, 2003. The awards for outstanding contributions to Canadian maritime safety were presented to Captain Sjoquist and Mr. Woodward today at the biannual meeting of the Canadian Marine Advisory Council.
"Captain Sjoquist and Mr. Woodward have demonstrated their dedication to maritime safety during their many years of service in the marine industry, in both the public and private sectors," said Mr. Collenette. "I thank them for their continued efforts to help enhance the safety of Canada's marine industry and congratulate them on their well-deserved awards."
Captain Sjoquist, who has been involved in the marine industry for more than 30 years, worked as a mariner before joining the Canadian Merchant Service Guild where he serves as national president. He has been a member of the Canadian Marine Advisory Council since 1973 and has dedicated himself to the development of better and more rigorous safety standards for marine officers.
Mr. Woodward has approximately 40 years of experience in the marine industry, working as, among other things, a marine inspector for Transport Canada, president and general manager for Allan - Woodward Ltd. and currently vice-president of the Council of Marine Carriers. He is also an industry representative on the Canadian Marine Advisory Council.
The Canadian Marine Advisory Council is a consultative body that represents parties with a recognized interest in shipping, navigation and marine pollution prevention. The council is jointly chaired by representatives of Transport Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard and advises both departments on issues that fall within their respective mandates. The council's meeting runs from May 5-8, 2003.
The Transport Canada Marine Safety Award was established in 1997 to stimulate an awareness of marine safety in Canada and to recognize persons, groups, companies, organizations, agencies or departments that have contributed, in an exceptional way, to this objective.
