LONDON, ONTARIO- Pat O'Brien, Member of Parliament for London-Fanshawe, on behalf of the Honourable Joe Volpe, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, today announced Government of Canada funding of $2,996,361 for a project by the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum-Forum canadien sur l'apprentissage (CAF-FCA). The CAF-FCA Infrastructure project is funded by the Sector Council Program.
"I strongly believe that this new funding will help promote apprenticeship as an effective training and educational system," said Mr. O'Brien. "As a nation, we must strive to build a society where all Canadians' talents and ability to learn are continually nurtured and developed throughout their lives."
The CAF-FCA Infrastructure project will support CAF-FCA activities during a 48-month period to maintain and expand its administrative and operational capacity to promote apprenticeship and to support Canada's apprenticeship systems.
"The investment announced today reinforces the importance of skilled trades to Canada's economy and the value of collaborative efforts of apprenticeship stakeholders from across the country," said Keith Lancastle, Executive Director of CAF-FCA. "By supporting a partnership of business, labour, provinces and territories, education, and equity-seeking groups, the Government of Canada is enabling CAF-FCA to promote apprenticeship as an education system that contributes to the nation's highly skilled work force."
CAF-FCA is a not-for-profit, multi-partite organization that brings together the key constituents within the apprenticeship community. CAF-FCA is a unique partnership of representatives from labour, business, the Inter-provincial Alliance of Apprenticeship Board Chairs (IPA), educators, persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities, Aboriginal persons, women, the Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship (CCDA), and Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.
CAF-FCA was established in June 2000 to promote apprenticeship as an effective training and education system contributing to the development of a skilled labour force; and to provide a mechanism for key stakeholders to support apprenticeship delivery systems across Canada.
The Government of Canada has pledged to work with the provinces, sector councils, labour organizations and learning institutions to create the skills and learning architecture that Canada needs to promote and support workplace learning.
Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
This project complies with all departmental administrative rules governing grants and contributions, and provisions of the Financial Administration Act, and is subject to review to ensure compliance with the objectives of the program
