For immediate releaseVANCOUVER, B.C., April 13, 2004 -- The Honourable Stephen Owen, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, announced today the start of the process to select a name for the new Government of Canada building located at 401 Burrard Street in downtown Vancouver.Residents of Greater Vancouver are asked to propose the name of a person (since deceased), place or event of historical significance to Canada and the region, and submit their suggestion to Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) for consideration.A panel comprised of local community representatives and PWGSC officials will review the names and submit a short list to Minister Owen who will make the final decision for the name of the building. The new name will be announced in a public dedication ceremony held at 401 Burrard Street in early summer."We have a landmark Government of Canada building in our community, the purpose of which is to serve the citizens of the Lower Mainland and British Columbia," said Minister Owen. "This is a unique opportunity to suggest a name of a person, place or event of historical significance to the province of British Columbia and Canada that reflects the importance of the building in the community." The Government of Canada building, located at the corner of Burrard and Pender streets is a 19-storey "green" office building. The building was designed to reduce the impact on the environment, use energy and water more efficiently and protect worker and occupant health. Environment Canada and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans are the two principal tenants of the building.Greater Vancouver area citizens are asked to submit their suggestions for a building name within the next month.
