Vancouver, B.C. Member of the Order of CanadaWilliam Brown has generously shared his professional acumen for the betterment of his community and his province. Formerly at the helm of the investment firm Odlum Brown Limited, he was instrumental in developing the Vancouver Foundation into one of the country's largest philanthropic institutions. He has also volunteered his time to numerous other organizations, including the Nature Trust of British Columbia, the Vancouver Public Library and the Spencer Foundation for Young People.Daniel E. McIvor, C.M. Richmond, B.C. Member of the Order of CanadaThis aviation pioneer developed water bombing techniques that have saved thousands of acres of forest in British Columbia. With ingenuity, conviction and determination, Daniel McIvor revolutionized the means of putting out forest fires from the air with the introduction of the Martin Mars airplane in the 1960s. As chief pilot of Flying Tankers Ltd., he coordinated the transformation of these massive "flying boats" into water bombers that can accurately target fires in even the most remote mountain regions. This former bush and Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line pilot has also been inducted into the British Columbia and Canadian aviation halls of fame. Annex BOrder of Canada Backgrounder The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement and service in various fields of human endeavour. It is our country's highest honour for lifetime achievement. Three different levels of membership – Companion, Officer and Member – honour people whose accomplishments vary in degree and scope. Appointments are made on the recommendation of an Advisory Council, chaired by the Chief Justice of Canada. The Governor General is the Chancellor and Principal Companion of the Order. Membership in the Advisory Council reflects the diversity and excellence in Canadian society. Certain Advisory Council members are appointed by virtue of their office; others are appointed to the Council for a fixed term to achieve a balanced representation of the various regions of the country.
