GOVERNMENT OF CANADA INVESTS FURTHER $25M IN ARGENTIA REMEDIATION

For Immediate Release ARGENTIA, Newfoundland and Labrador, May 21, 2004 -- The Government of Canada will invest a further $25 million in the environmental remediation of the former United States military base at Argentia, Newfoundland and Labrador. The announcement was made today by the Honourable John Efford, Minister of Natural Resources, on behalf of the Honourable Stephen Owen, Minister of Public Works and Government Services. "The growth and sustainability of our communities is a priority for the Government of Canada," said Minister Efford. "This investment will be significant in ensuring that the Argentia property is remediated to commercial and industrial standards allowing continued development on this site development that will help create a brighter future for this community." This additional funding brings the total Government of Canada investment in the remediation of Argentia to $106 million over a 10-year period. This $25 million will address remediation work in addition to the original Remediation Action Plan. This includes the treatment of a large volume of contaminated soil currently stockpiled at the site; remediation of the former Northside Jet Fuel Storage Area; the completion of in-situ capping of Shag Pond; the completion of excavation, removal and disposal of Bunker "C" fuel from the Northside Bulk Fuel Farm; and additional smaller-scale remediation projects. "The Government of Canada is committed to an aggressive plan to clean up federal contaminated sites. The Argentia Environmental Remediation Project is a shining example of this," said Minister Efford. "In total, more than 145,000 tonnes of materials from remediation activities at Argentia have been recycled or reused over the life of the project. This award-winning, sustainable approach to environmental remediation will continue as the project moves forward."
