FIXED LINK TO TORONTO CITY CENTRE AIRPORT PROHIBITED

No. H043/04 For release June 21, 2004 OTTAWA - The Government of Canada today prepublished draft regulations that prohibit the building of a fixed link between mainland Toronto and the Toronto City Centre Airport on Centre Island. Transport Minister Tony Valeri put forward the draft regulations in the Canada Gazette, Part I. "With these proposed regulations, the Government of Canada is demonstrating its commitment to work with the people and the government of Toronto," said Mr. Valeri. "We continue to respect the wishes of Torontonians on this important issue." The proposed Toronto Port Authority Regulations are consistent with the objectives of the Canada Marine Act: to manage the marine infrastructure and services in a commercial manner that encourages, and takes into account, input from users and the community where a port is located. Furthermore, the proposed regulations are consistent with the Government of Canada's goal of responding to local interests on the issues of access to the Toronto City Centre Airport. The regulations respond directly to the views and interests of the people of Toronto, as represented by the Toronto City Council.
