CAMROSE, ALBERTA- The Honourable Paul Bonwick, Member of Parliament for Simcoe-Grey, on behalf of the Honourable Joe Volpe, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, today announced funding of a total of $890,995 for three projects targeted to help 44 youth in Alberta.
The organizations who will receive funding include the Flagstaff Family Community Services, Stettler District Family Community Support Services, and the Camrose Open Door Association.
"The Government of Canada is committed to developing Canada's future work force by helping youth acquire the skills and knowledge they need to participate in the labour market," said Mr. Bonwick. "We are proud to contribute to projects such as these that enable youth in Alberta to develop life and employability skills through hands-on experience in a supportive environment."
Human Resources and Skills Development Canada is providing financial assistance for these projects through the Skills Link program. This program helps youth facing barriers to employment develop the broad range of skills, knowledge and work experience needed to participate in the job market.
These projects are funded through the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES), which offers three programs: Skills Link, Summer Work Experience and Career Focus.
These programs provide flexibility to choose from a range of activities that can be tailored to meet individual needs and ensure that young people acquire the skills and work experience they need to find and keep a job.
Funding for these projects was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
These projects have been reviewed to ensure compliance with the Department's administration of its grant and contribution programs and are subject to review under the Financial Administration Act.

Focus on the Future (Killam, Alberta)
The Flagstaff Family Community Services will help 15 youth prepare for, obtain and maintain employment. Participants will establish career action plans, attend workshops designed to develop skills transferable to the workplace and receive workplace coaching and mentoring. Participants will also benefit from a work experience in a field of interest they identified in their plan. Workshops will cover a variety of topics, including, but not limited to, communications skills, financial management, problem solving and conflict resolution, personal management skills, teamwork, career planning, job search and maintenance, interview skills, volunteerism, legal rights and responsibilities, values and ethics and the Alberta labour standards.

Stettler Skills Link (Stettler, Alberta)
The Stettler District Family Community Support Services will help 15 youth in the Stettler area overcome employment barriers and develop the skills and knowledge they need to participate in the labour market. Participants will establish career action plans and attend workshops designed to develop life and employability skills. They will also benefit from a work experience in a field of interest they identified in their plan. Workshops will include topics such as communications, responsibility, goal-setting, time management, financial management, meal planning, résumé preparation, interview skills, computer skills and job retention.

Positive Personal Futures (Camrose, Alberta)
The Camrose Open Door Association will promote education and skills as being key to labour market participation and help 14 youth in the Camrose area overcome employment barriers. Participants will prepare career plans, attend workshops designed to develop skills transferable to the workplace and take part in community service projects. Participants will be divided into teams that will work on short-term community service projects, such as working with the city of Camrose to clean up a park or designated area of concern, working with a local daycare to prepare snacks and activities, working with the Boys and Girls Club to provide a special summer fun event for young children or working with the Emergency Clothing Furniture Depot to sort and clean donated items.
