Canada-Quebec Infrastructure Works Program Repentigny, September 2, 2004 -- Lise Thériault, Member of the National Assembly for Anjou, on behalf of Jean-Marc Fournier, Ministre des Affaires municipales, du Sport et du Loisir, and Massimo Pacetti, Member of Parliament for Saint-Léonard¿Saint-Michel, on behalf of the Honourable Jacques Saada, Minister of Canada Economic Development for the Quebec Regions and Minister responsible for the Francophonie, are pleased to announce the approval of four new projects by the City of Repentigny, valued at $10,782,592, under the Canada-Quebec Infrastructure Works Program. The four infrastructure projects in Repentigny will receive a total of $7,188,396 in financial assistance to be assumed equally by the governments of Quebec and Canada, which will each contribute $3,594,198. The projects, which consist primarily of improvement work to water and sewer systems, are summarized as follows: Replacement of approximately 1,480 meters of obsolete water mains and replacement of the combined sewer system by a domestic sewer line over a length of approximately 1,188 meters and a storm-water sewer over a length of almost 979 meters under Denis, Camille and Maurice streets. Other work is also planned under Rivest street, aimed at transforming a combined sewer line into a storm-water sewer. Replacement of a 150 mm diameter water conduit with a 200 mm diameter conduit over a length of approximately 540 meters under Maurice street, between Camille and Alain streets. Installation of a domestic sewer line over a length of approximately 405 meters and a storm-water sewer over a length of approximately 540 meters is also planned to replace the combined sewer system currently in place. Replacement of the water main over a length of approximately 325 meters under Lanoue street, between de la Concorde and Plateau-Beaujeu streets. In addition, the combined sewer system currently in place will be replaced by approximately 325 meters of domestic sewer lines and approximately 350 meters of storm-water sewers. The last and most important project involves the replacement of the water and sewer systems on Notre-Dame, between Thouin and Richelieu. This project consists of replacing the obsolete water main over a length of approximately 1,620 meters in order to convert the combined sewer system into a sanitary sewer and to install a storm-water sewer over a length of approximately 1,760 meters. This work was made necessary by breaks in the water main and by waste water backing up in homes in the sector during heavy rain. The work will also ensure better fire protection and improve public health. Over 1400 people will benefit directly from these improvements to the municipal water main and domestic or rain sewer facilities. In general, this work will permit obsolete municipal infrastructures (between 40 to 45 years old) to be replaced, will solve problems related to breaks, leaks and interruptions in service and will improve pressure within the system, all of which will result in improved water service to the residents concerned. This work will contribute toward ensuring better distribution of drinking water and improving waste water management. The Mayor of Repentigny, Ms Chantal Deschamps, stated that she is convinced that these projects will bring improvements to essential infrastructures and to the quality of life of the citizens who use them. These four projects fall under subcomponent 1.1 of the Canada-Quebec Infrastructure Works program, providing $250 million in overall government assistance. The Canada-Quebec Infrastructure Works Program is aimed at helping communities repair, replace and build water supply, sewer and sewage treatment systems, develop projects involving experiments with new technologies and create projects that enhance, restore or construct facilities with economic, urban or regional side benefits. This aspect of the program is overseen by the Ministère des Affaires municipales, du Sport et du Loisir. The program also supports highway systems and public transportation, under the responsibility of the Ministère des Transports du Québec and Infrastructures-Transport. Canada Economic Development administers the program on behalf of the Government of Canada. The program will generate work worth a total of over $1.686 billion.
