YELLOWKNIFE, January 24, 2005 -- Residents of the Yellowknife area are being asked to come up with a name for the new Government of Canada building scheduled to open later this summer. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Ethel Blondin-Andrew, MP for the Western Arctic, on behalf of the Honourable Scott Brison, Minister of Public Works and Government Services (PWGSC). "I am very proud to make this announcement today," said Ms. Blondin-Andrew. " I have every confidence in the outstanding committee that has agreed to take on this important task. Its work will have meaning for the people of Yellowknife and the Northwest Territories many years into the future. I wish them well, and I encourage everyone to start thinking, and get involved." A community Liaison Committee, comprised of volunteers from the Living History Society, and Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce, along with community leaders, Bishop John Sperry, Barb Bromley and Shorty Brown, and chaired by Margaret Henderson, project lead for PWGSC, will lead the search. The Community Liaison Committee is responsible for recommending one final selection and two alternate names to Minister Brison. Residents may submit the name of a person (deceased), place or event of historical, social or cultural significance, to PWGSC for consideration. Public announcements will appear in local newspapers over the next several days with information on how to submit a suggestion. To be considered for selection, names must conform to specific criteria for naming government structures; these are available on the What's New section of our Web site at: www.pwgsc.gc.ca Yellowknife and area citizens are asked to submit their suggestions for a building name within the next month. The deadline for submission is Friday, February 18, 2005. The final decision will be announced at the official opening of the building. The Government of Canada building, located at the corner of Franklin and 50th streets, is a four-storey "green" office building. The building was designed to have minimal environmental impact, use energy and water more efficiently and protect worker and occupant health.
