FCAC CAUTIONS CONSUMERS ABOUT FRAUDULENT E-MAILS

OTTAWA, March 16, 2005 -- The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) warns consumers about fraudulent banking e-mails currently in circulation, and cautions them against divulging any personal information without first consulting their financial institution directly. The e-mails appear to be from major banks or other financial institutions, often using familiar logos or trademarks and in some cases even providing links to the Web sites of legitimate financial institutions. The messages, commonly known as "phishing" e-mails, ask consumers to provide or verify private information, such as credit card numbers or an on-line banking password. For consumers who receive these e-mails, FCAC offers the following advice: DO NOT respond to the e-mail. DO NOT provide ANY personal information as requested. Contact your financial institution immediately. DO NOT use the phone number provided in the e-mail. Use a contact number from a monthly statement, the phone book or the back of any issued bankcard. FCAC also advises consumers to contact the Agency if they are being held liable for losses resulting from a phishing scam, as many financial institutions have publicly committed to protecting their customers in the event of fraud. FCAC oversees public commitments made by federally regulated financial institutions. Consumers can contact FCAC toll-free by calling: 1-866-461-3222.
