OTTAWA, March 31, 2005 — The Honourable David L. Emerson, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), today proposed the re-appointment of Peter Clark as Executive Director of the Council. This appointment will be reviewed by the Standing Committee on Industry, Natural Resources, Science and Technology. As part of the government's policy of providing a greater role for parliamentarians in reviewing appointments, Mr. Clark will appear before the Committee at an upcoming meeting. "Having served in this role since April 1999, Mr. Clark is well equipped to support efficient and effective standardization. I look forward to the continued success of the SCC under his leadership," said Minister Emerson. As Executive Director, Mr. Clark leads the operations of the SCC and guides the work of the National Standards System to benefit all stakeholders and to promote Canadian participation in domestic and international standards activities. He is currently a member of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Council Board, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Management Board and a member of the Board of Directors of the Pan American Standards Commission (COPANT). For many years, Mr. Clark has been a prominent politician in Ontario's Ottawa-Carleton region as former Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton. In addition, he also served as Chair of Ottawa-Carleton Regional Transit Commission, and Mayor of Cumberland, Ontario. The Standards Council of Canada is a Crown corporation with the mandate to promote efficient and effective use of voluntary standardization and reports to Parliament through the Minister of Industry. Located in Ottawa, the Standards Council has a 15-member governing council and a staff of approximately 90. It is Canada's representative to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
