Allergy Alert - Improperly Declared Wheat in Cappola Sopressata Salami

OTTAWA, April 7, 2005 -- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Cappola Food Inc. are warning people with allergies to wheat not to consume Cappola Sopressata Salami. The affected product contains wheat which is not declared on the French ingredients list of the label. The English ingredients list has wheat declared. This alert is of concern to those individuals who have allergies to wheat. The affected product, Cappola Sopressata Salami, is sold in 2 x 250 g packages bearing UPC 777135 447153. All lot codes and Best Before dates are affected. The manufacturer, Cappola Food Inc., Toronto, Ontario is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The affected product has been distributed through Costco stores in Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada. Consumption of this product may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons with allergies to wheat. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
