About HRSDC | Our Offices | Programs & Services | A-Z Index April 18, 2005 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 05-24 OTTAWA, ONTARIO - The Honourable Joe Fontana, Minister of Labour and Housing, today announced the appointment of Mr. Gary Fane as a full-time member (employees) of the Canada Industrial Relations Board. "Mr. Fane's educational background, professional development and achievements in labour relations make him an excellent candidate for the Canada Industrial Relations Board," said Minister Fontana. "The Board will value his knowledge and outstanding experience in labour relations and collective bargaining issues." Since 1996, Mr. Fane has been Director of Transportation for CAW-Canada, the largest private sector union in Canada. During his long career at CAW-Canada, he held several management positions. From 1992 to 1996, he was National Director; from 1990 to 1992, he was National Staff Representative where his main responsibilities were the negotiation and administration of airline collective agreements. Finally, from 1985 to 1990, Mr. Fane was Vice President with the Transportation Communications Union (formerly BRAC) where he successfully negotiated several national collective agreements. A graduate from Carleton University in Ottawa (Bachelor of Arts - Major in Law and Political Science), Mr. Fane also completed Industrial Relations Seminars on Labour Arbitration, Change Management, and Dispute Resolution Skills at the Queen's University School of Industrial Relations in Kingston where he his currently completing a Master's degree in Industrial Relations. The Canada Industrial Relations Board, which came into effect on January 1, 1999, is an independent representational, quasi-judicial tribunal whose mandate is to interpret and apply the provisions under Part I of the Canada Labour Code dealing with bargaining rights and unfair labour practices.
