June 15, 2005 Dartmouth, N.S. - Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) advises the public that the harvesting of bi-valve molluscs, including oysters, clams, mussels, scallops, quahogs and whelks, for recreational or commercial purposes is prohibited until further notice in Passamaquoddy Bay (except St. Croix River and Oak Bay), the foreshore and waters within 300 m of Deer Island and the foreshore and waters within 300 m of the following islands in the Bay of Fundy: Spectacle Island, English Island, Pendleton Island, New Ireland Island, Macs Island, Nub Island, Mohawk Island, Parker Island, Jameson Island, Partridge Island, Crow Island, Little Island, Hardwood Island, Fish Island, Adam Island, Beans Island, Simpsons Island, Barnes Island, Mowat Island, Mink Island, St. Helena Island, Nubble Island, White Horse Island, Dinner Island, Hospital Islands, White Island, Spruce Island, Bar Island, Tinkers Island, Sandy Island, Sandy Ledge Island, Casco Bay Island, Green Island, Popes Island, Indian Island, Marble Island and Cherry Island, Charlotte County, New Brunswick. This closure is due to an increase in levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP). At this time, areas presently open around Campobello Island have not been affected and remain open to harvesting. PSP results from eating shellfish containing toxins. These toxins are derived from planktonic organisms called dinoflagellates. Shellfish are filter feeders that ingest and accumulate these toxic dinoflagellates in their system. When the right conditions are present (water temperature, salinity, weather patterns, nutrient requirements, etc.), levels of concentration can increase. As these conditions are unpredictable, detailed control measures must be put in place to ensure that the health and safety of the public is protected. For additional information on shellfish closures in your area, please contact your local DFO office. - 30 - Additional information can be found in the DFO Backgrounder, Shellfish Harvest Closures, available at: http://www.mar.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/communications/maritimes/back03e/B-MAR-03-(3E).html.
