SPRINGDALE, November 23, 2005 – A $1,575,585 competitive contract has been awarded to B&R Enterprises Limited of Springdale, Newfoundland and Labrador, to construct a new breakwater wharf in the province, Port Saunders. Awarded on behalf of the Small Craft Harbours (SCH) program of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, this contract will be completed by the end of August 2006.
The announcement was made today by the Honourable Gerry Byrne, Member of Parliament for Humber-St. Barbe-Baie Verte, on behalf of the Honourable Scott Brison, Minister of Public Works and Government Services.
“The project will provide Port Saunders with adequate protection for the existing facilities,” said Mr. Byrne. “In fact, the whole work of construction and dredging will definitely be beneficial for the community. This initiative demonstrates that the Government of Canada supports regions and their economic development.”
The project consists of constructing a new treated timber cribwork breakwater structure completed with reinforced concrete deck. In addition, basin dredging and electrical improvements will be added to the work.
The Small Craft Harbours (SCH) program works in partnership with local harbour authorities in five regions across the country to provide commercial fishers and boaters with safe and accessible facilities. The SCH program ensures that nearly 1,300 harbours and 6,000 structures, critical to the economic and social life of small maritime communities, remain safe and in good repair.
