Vision and Comprehensive Agreement Essential to Canada-U.S. Defence and Security- Report

Ottawa-A combined vision and a comprehensive defence and security agreement are just two of 32 recommendations outlined in a Final Report produced by the Canada-U.S. military Bi-National Planning Group for the purpose of enhancing Canada and U.S. defence and security.
The report, which is addressed to the Governments of Canada and the United States, is designed to stimulate discussion and highlight ways of enhancing bi-national military cooperation to better protect the people of both countries from terrorist attacks and to respond to emergencies, natural and man-made.
“The findings and recommendations contained in the report provide great insight into key areas of Canada-United States military cooperation, and the BPG’s efforts are intended to be a catalyst in defining and strengthening future bi-national relationships,” said Lieutenant-General Eric Findley, Head of the Bi-National Planning Group.
Some of the key recommendations in the report include:

The Governments of Canada and the United States develop a Canada-U.S. vision, providing direction and authority for enhanced coordination and cooperation among foreign policy, defence and security organizations.

The Governments of Canada and the United States execute a “Comprehensive Defence and Security Agreement,” providing authority and guidance for increased information sharing and cooperation among Canada-U.S. partners.

The Governments of Canada and the United States develop and implement a nation-to-nation information sharing agreement, providing direction and authority for information sharing among Canada-U.S. defence and security organizations, while recognizing restrictions under national laws and policies.

The report is one of the many contributions the Bi-National Planning Group has made since it was formed in 2002, while respecting the right of both countries to take unilateral action.
