MARIE-REINE-DU-MONDE BASILICA-CATHEDRAL NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE OF CANADA
MONTREAL, QUEBEC, May 14, 2006 -- A Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada plaque commemorating the national historic significance of the Marie-Reine-du-Monde Basilica-Cathedral was unveiled in Montréal today, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, announced.
"The basilica-cathedral embodies the dream of a man, Monsignor Ignace Bourget, who played a significant role in 19th century Quebec history. The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of preserving this highly symbolic place of worship and its remarkable architecture," said Minister Ambrose.
The cathedral is a testament to the ultramontanism espoused by Monsignor Bourget, second bishop of Montréal. Eager to express his deep commitment to the papacy, he decided to construct a cathedral based on the model of St. Peter's in Rome. Built between 1870 and 1894, according to plans by the architect Victor Bourgeau and Rev. Joseph Michaud, the cathedral's façade, dome and interior decoration closely reflect those of its famous model. When it was completed, it proudly asserted the presence of the Catholic Church in an area once occupied by railway terminals.
"The Government of Canada is proud to have contributed close to $1 million to the cathedral restoration project, including $500,000 provided by Parks Canada. The grant money went towards renovating architectural and decorative features," added Minister Ambrose.
Founded in 1919, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada advises the Minister of the Environment on the national historic significance of sites, people and events that shaped Canadian history. Through the designation of national historic sites, people and events, and the placement of commemorative plaques describing their significance, the Government of Canada is fostering a greater public appreciation and understanding of our shared past.
